Roy Lee Smith, 92, of Lampasas died on Feb. 20, 2022.

Services will be held at First Street Church of Christ on Feb. 26 at 2 p.m., with visitation an hour prior. Interment will follow at Hurst Ranch Cemetery in Star. Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel in Lampasas has charge of arrangements.

Roy was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Roswell, New Mexico to Homer and Lillie (Hext) Smith.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy and retired with the rank of chief petty officer. He served in the Korean War and was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star.

After his retirement, Roy served in the reserves for a number of years.

He also taught industrial arts in Freer, then worked for Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos from 1968-1985. He moved to the Star area in 1985, before returning to Lampasas in 2001.

Roy loved his family and also loved his coffee group with a crew of friends from around town. He enjoyed woodworking and made many things for people at no charge, including dominoes and canes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelda in 2018; son, David Smith in 2006; and by brothers S.L. Smith, Jack Smith and Lawrence Smith.

Survivors include his daughter, Donna Helm, and husband, Steve; sister, Jane Grumbles; grandchildren Walt Smith, D’Ann Cogburn and husband Brandon, Kristan Duncan, Nocona Koenig and husband Darin, Stevie Helm and wife Rose, and Shane Helm and wife Stephanie; 12 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
